The Story Behind Machine Knitting Central

Our Digital Rescue Mission

Machine Knitting Central was built on nothing but a labour of love. Over the last few decades, the brilliant, mechanical world of the domestic flat-bed knitting machine has become an endangered craft. With major manufacturers closing their doors in the 1990s, the institutional memory of how to operate these machines is slowly fading. Even worse, the vital physical resources—thousands of technical manuals, punchcard templates, and vintage pattern magazines—are currently rotting in attics, being lost to damp garages, or ending up in landfills.

We knew we had to step in. This website is a dedicated digital rescue mission. Our goal is to hunt down, digitize, and carefully catalog the heritage, knowledge, and historical publications of machine knitting. By doing so, we are ensuring that the mechanical brilliance of the past is preserved, freely accessible, and ready to be passed on to a brand-new generation of makers.
